Making Things By Hand Isn't Always Cheaper

I have been in this mood where I want to make everything by hand. I do love to shop. I also love to support local businesses by purchasing straight from them. However I think there's something more creative and fulfilling about making things by hand. What I don't agree with, however, is when people say that it's cheaper to make items by hand. That's simply not always true.

The problem is that making things by hand takes up a lot of time. This can mean that it's actually costing more to make an item by hand than it does to buy it. Sure, the materials that you pay for may cost less. But if you spend hours and hours of your time creating something then you have to take that time into consideration.

How much money you save depends a lot on your skill with the task. For example, let's say you wanted to make a pettiskirt by hand for a child's costume. If you knew how to do this easily then you could probably save a lot of money since the cost of fabric is a lot cheaper than the cost of a pre-made costume. However, if it took you a long time to create this skirt then you could probably have bought it and not wasted any money.

There are definitely benefits to making items yourself. I totally support it. But getting things made cheaper isn't necessarily always going to be a benefit that you get.

What Are Normal Symptoms of Impending Menopause?

I’m just wondering if anyone out there can help me out in determining whether a couple of symptoms I have are related to impending menopause. I’m 46, and I’m having a bit of a hard time of it, but I’m not sure whether it’s worth making an appointment with my ob-gyn.

First of all, I’m finding that I’m retaining water so much more, especially at the mid-point of my cycle and right before my period, but more so of the former. I mean, I get to the point that I’m just popping the diuretics or else drinking extra coffee just to try and get my stomach to go back down. What’s the opposite of incontinence treatment? But while I’m at it, I’ll mention that not only do I have occasional loss of bladder control but occasional slipping of the backside, too.

Secondly, I have a lot more digestive, sleep and skin problems. I can treat all of this myself but I wonder if there’s some hormone therapy or something—maybe soy?—that will just take care of it all instead of my taking so many different OTC things. But what concerns me the most is the random cramping I’m experiencing in my uterus. Of course, I’ll get it all checked out at my yearly pap/physical, but I’d just like to know now if any of this sounds relatively normal.

Yesterday's Horrors are Today's Treasures

Things have changed a lot in our society in a very short amount of time. What is interesting to see is that these changes have allowed a lot of negative things to turn into positive things. Aspects of our earth or our society that were terrible for our ancestors can be wonderful for us.

A simple example of this can be explored when you think about traveling to a place like Fiji. Fiji was created as the result of volcanic activity. There are numerous coral reefs that exist there because of the natural activity of this part of the world.

Up until the nineteenth century, these natural structures were the bane of existence for explorers. Mariners from Europe struggled to deal with trying to get around the Fiji islands. They basically considered the reefs to be a hindrance to their daily activities.

Today one of the most popular tourist activities in the world is to go dive in Fiji. The reason that Fiji diving is so popular is specifically because of the beauty of the coral reefs. What our ancestors loathed is now a reason that people come to this part of the world. This is just one example of how life's changes have made negative things into positive ones for some of us.

Need a Nice Model for Student Motivation

I’m a drama teacher at a high school in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. About half of my teaching assignment is with technical theatre kids, where they learn to build, hang and run lights, and set up and run audio. I kind of like the idea of running the class a little bit like a workplace rather than like a traditional classroom

The only thing is, I haven’t ever worked in a “shop” where they might be likely to have some sort of incentive programs for employees; I’d really kind of like to see how one was set up because I think that would be an excellent component to add to my tech classes. I also know that employee recognition program can be quite elaborate, so learning all the in’s and out’s of them would be important just so I could take pieces of it to use in my shop. I know there are even online redemption centers and such, but I wouldn’t need to go that elaborate, though having a little “store” of my own wouldn’t be a bad idea.

I wish my own place of business would offer something like this just so I would have a good ongoing model to look to as I build up an incentive program in the classroom.

Using personal loans to get ahead in life

It is tough enough in our economic world to just work your job. If you even have a job, you are very fortunate. For those that want to try and do even more with their lives, things can get that much tougher. Recently, I decided that I wanted to start a sideline business. I knew it would not be easy, however, I knew even more that I did not want to work for someone else any longer than I had to.

One of the first things I did was start to look to friends and family for personal loans because it was not going to be cheap to get the business up and running. As such, I made sure to compile an attractive business plan, and a simple executive outline so no one would be bored when reviewing my proposals.

After hitting up everyone I could think of, I decided the rest of my initial capital would need to be self funded. But I had no further money; what would I do. As I was lamenting my situation during lunch at my day job, a friend asked if I had looked into payday loans. Of course, I had not, but soon realized this might be just the push I needed to get over the hump.

Go on a Diet to Get a Job

A lot of people are having a really hard time finding work right now. Having a great resume alone may not get you the job that you are seeking. There are simply too many people who are all competing for the same jobs. Because of this, you really need to make a positive impression if you're going to make the cut when applying for work.

For a lot of people, it means that it's time to turn your attention to your appearance. People who are overweight may want to go on a diet to get in better shape. People who are a bit older than the average applicant may even consider getting light cosmetic work done to reduce wrinkles and to create the illusion of youth.

Should it be this way? Of course not. People should get hired for the quality of the work that they can do. But the unfortunate reality is that there are a lot of other people who can do the same job that you can do. Those who are doing the hiring are taking a lot of different factors into consideration and your appeal as an individual may be one of those factors.

If this annoys you, think of it this way - it's probably good for you anyway. Most of us could stand to lose a few pounds and to get in better shape. Looking good helps us to feel good. If a new job is what has to motivate you to do that well then at least it's doing something!

Tools for In-House Collaboration

Businesses that are seeking to increase their efficiency should look first at strengthening their use of in-house tools for collaboration. Many people still get together in a shared physical space in the office to go over ideas. While this is great for brainstorming and working out conflicts, it tends to be inefficient for tasks like sharing information. Businesses that make use of collaboration tools to share information are going to be a lot more efficient than businesses that don't. They streamline the communication process and reduce the amount of time that is wasted in unnecessary conversation. They also tend to have a more up-to-the-minute understanding of the team's progress.

One of the most common tools used for collaboration in the office today is email. Email communication is enhanced when it is combined with in-house instant messaging which allows for quick exchanges of information in real time. Businesses shouldn't limit themselves to only these tools though. Advanced online information sharing tools (such as project management websites) are also important. So are physical tools for sharing, such as networked attached scanners which allow employees to easily scan and share documents within the same network. By making use of all of these different tools that are available, team members can maximize their productivity when working in a shared space.

My Farrier's Health Insurance Dilemma

My farrier was out to trim my horse's feet on Wednesday, and after he was done I spent about an hour chatting with him. He recently lost his wife, and aside from the obvious emotional difficulties, this presents him with a new challenge: Since he is self-employed, her job provided him with health insurance.

Now that he doesn't have her benefits to rely on any longer, he is trying to find individual health insurance in Florida, and it hasn't been easy. Apparently, the nature of his business — working with horses — makes him high risk, so he's had a hard time finding an individual health plan that is reasonably priced.

Now, my farrier is an older guy, so I don't think it'll be very long before he qualifies for Florida Medicare, but until then he still needs coverage. Eventually he managed to find a company that specialized in insuring people who work in the farm industry. It's still expensive, but it's much more affordable than any of his other options.

If you are self-employed and you are having a hard time finding health insurance, you might check insurance companies who advertise that they specialize in your industry. In addition, unions and other organizations may offer group healthcare plans for members. It's important to obtain health insurance on your own if you are self-employed, so if you can't get it via a spouse or domestic partner, be sure to explore all your options to see what is available to you.
